I never met Andrew Olmsted. He was never more than a voice on the bitstream to me, but I respected him. He blogged under his own name, and also was a front-pager at Obsidian Wings, under the name of "G'Kar" - a well-chosen nom de plume. He was a sane and sober conservative, and a welcome voice at OW. His posts were meaty, humane, and honorable.
Maj. Andrew Olmsted was killed in action in Iraq on Thursday. Hilzoy has posted his last words here.
Rest in peace, warrior.

Now We Are Fifty
Jan. 4th, 2008 06:58 pmFifty. Um. Half a century.
I had considered writing a reflective and rather somber post on Being Me and Being Fifty. I decided against it, finally, for two reasons. One was that it would have contained a certain amount of whingeing, and the news about Andrew Olmsted kind of puts my problems into the shade. For the other reason - well, look under the cut.
