Reading this morning's paper, I saw that tomorrow's predicted 37F high was captioned as "Not as cold".
The high for today? 20F.
So, naturally, today we had the first power outage of the winter. Around 7:15, I was awakened from a midmorning drowse by the insistent beep of the UPS on my computer. A bit fuzzily, I realized what that meant, and tested it by flipping the nearest light switch, without effect. I shut down the computer and went back to bed.
After an hour and a half of peculiar dreams, mostly focusing on the power outage, I got up again. The indoor temperature was down to 60F. I recalled seeing some bundles of firewood outside Shop'n'Save, so I bundled up and headed out. (It was cold enough that I had to invert my stocking cap, bringing down the face-cover. Hair and beard only go so far.)
As I passed Kohl's, I noticed a hand-lettered sign: "Owing to the Power Outage, We Are Closed". Oh-oh.... Shop'n'Save: "Closed because of Power Out". All right, let's see how far it extends....
The next block down, lights were on, so I turned into the Schnuck's, which also had firewood. I picked up a few other items as well and trudged home. Cold, cold, cold....
When I got home, the light I'd left on was merrily lit. The outage had lasted about two hours.
Whew.
