The Other Murphy

As of this writing, the Padres are a game and a half in front in the NL West. However, their ace starter, Jake Peavy, is 4-8. (Chris Young and Chan Ho Park have stepped up in his place. It's not Jake's fault; he's usually pitched reasonably well, but the offense hasn't helped him.)

Meanwhile, I have three appointments with students today, and have come down with a (hopefully) mild cold. I'll have to cancel.

Sigh.

Hamdan Case Decided

The Supreme Court has ruled against the government in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. In particular, they have declared that Common Article 3 of the Geneva Convention applies in the war on al-Qaeda. Bully for them.

Jim Baen

Jim Baen has died. I can only echo selenite: a lot of my library has "Baen" on its spine. David Drake has an obituary here.
