So, the new television season has begun. I've been sampling a few of the new shows, and so far I'm not impressed. Rome actually looked good, but there are timing issues, and I haven't been following it. How I Met Your Mother is mildly amusing, and I may give it one more episode, but it's on thin ice with me. Commander in Chief shows some promise, but I'm rather annoyed with a couple of items. First off, Nigeria does not, at present, have a prime minister; the president is head of state and of government. (I suppose it's possible that they'll move to a parliamentary system in the next ten years, but I'm inclined to doubt it.) Second, the Speaker made a crack about Muslim countries being unlikely to listen to a female leader. At the present moment, there are three majority-Muslim countries that have already elected female leaders, and they're not small ones: Pakistan (Benazir Bhutto), Indonesia (Megawati Sukarnopatri), and Bangladesh (Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina Wazed). (Make that four: Tansu Ciller was Prime Minister of Turkey for a while.) I'll grant that this may have been an attempt to present the Speaker as an ignoramus, so I'll cut them a little slack - but not a lot. They'll have to do better research.

As for returning shows, Gilmore Girls has already shown three episodes; it's been good, but not great as yet. Veronica Mars premieres tonight, and I'll be watching it rather than Lost. (I watched the Lost premiere last week and, though it was interesting, it was not enough so to tip the balance. I'll try to catch it in reruns.) Everwood premieres tomorrow night. We'll see.

Ah, well, if nothing catches fire, there's always Battlestar Galactica... in January. Sigh.
