Firefox, Java and I don't seem to get along.

When I started using LJ, I noticed that some people's animated icons were visible as such on my office machine (using IE), but not on my home computer (using Firefox). There were also other situations in which Firefox seemed not to cooperate with Java, most notably in connection with Haloscan. (A number of blogs that I visit periodically implement their comments using Haloscan; I can bring them up, again, on the office computer but not at home.) At some point a few months ago, something (I don't remember what) happened, which prompted me to do something else (I don't remember what), and lo and behold the animated icons came to life. (Still no luck with Haloscan, though.)

A couple of days ago, I upgraded to Firefox 1.0. There've been one or two immediately visible improvements. Unfortunately, I've lost the animated icons again.

One of these days I'm going to have to figure out how to get FF and Java to play nice.

Update: The icons are back, and Haloscan works too. I don't quite know what happened. I uninstalled the Java run-time environment and downloaded the update, but haven't installed it; nonetheless, things are working now.

Should I sacrifice a chip to the computer gods, in thanksgiving?
