Well, that was an interesting season finale.
The theme of tacit understanding in the Lorelai/Emily and Luke/Lorelai scenes was nice; Emily's outrage (and Luke's) was perfectly reasonable from one perspective, but Lorelai's reaction was also reasonable. Odd that Lorelai, the free spirit, should be the champion of pretending everything's normal, while Emily is the one slashing through subterfuge. Emily's world is cracking open, and I think we're going to see a rather different woman next season.
On the other side, we have willful self-deception, humorously on Digger's part and ominously on the parts of Rory and Dean. I have to say, though, that the episode showed Alexis Bledel's limitations as an actor in high relief. Her line readings in the scenes with Dean (e.g., "I can't believe this is happening") were just off. The final confrontation with Lorelai was rather better, but not quite there; the "I hate you" line wasn't well delivered.
Cliffhangers have a long tradition behind them. But there's a definite problem here; having two or three months of show time elapse without comment (except in flashback or exposition) is a bad idea - the L/L and R/D scenes are going to have immediate repercussions, and they can't be postponed in the internal logic. They've fluffed this sort of thing before - I'm thinking of Lane's enforced vacation in Korea a season or two ago - and I'm not quite confident they'll handle it right this time.
But, those reservations aside, I thought it was a very good episode. The scene in which Luke finally came straight with Lorelai was outstanding; Kirk was neurotically funny as always; and the minor characters - Jackson, Babette, Miss Patty, even Taylor - played their roles perfectly.
So how long are we going to have to wait?
