Today has been a good day. Things looked rocky to begin with, but all has melted into air.

I have had some trouble modifying my Livejournal from my home computer; I can post, but not much else. Some combination of my browser and my security software is glitching things, and I'll have to work that out. In the meantime, though, I found today that I can make modifications from my office computer, and that will suffice for the time being.

This morning I was shocked to find a large - as in "four figure" - discrepancy between my records of my checking account and my bank's records of the same. This evening, though, I found the explanation, and got a promise that it would be fixed. It seems that my mortgage-holder - after receiving checks in the amount of $775 every month for something like seven years - decided that this month's check was for $7750. I'll have to call my bank tomorrow to make sure, but that weight is off my back.

In my abstract algebra class today, only two of the four students showed up. (One is out of town on Department-sanctioned business; I don't know where the fourth guy was.) I finished my lecture about ten minutes early, and opened the floor to general questions. After a couple of desultory inquiries about how far we were going to get in the book, one of them asked, "Do you know which advanced classes you're going to teach this fall?" The other chimed in, "And can we take them?" Alas, the answer to the latter question was "No"; neither of my classes this fall is suitable for graduate students. I did invite them to take my summer course (history of math from Descartes to the present), and they seemed interested. Anyway, that all made me feel good. (I'll admit it, I'm susceptible to small, well-chosen doses of butter.)

And the Padres beat up the Dodgers, in LA, in the season opener.

Today has been a good day.
