- American Pie, Don McLean. I have to admit I've never puzzled out all of the allusions in this one, but even in incomprehension I enjoy it.
- Love Child, the Supremes. I... admire this song.
- Pride of Man, Gordon Lightfoot. Musically there's not much to it, but the lyrics give me the shivers every time.
- Goodbye to You, Michelle Branch. This gets on the list via accidental associations, but I do like it.
- At the Zoo, Simon and Garfunkel. Silly, but entertaining.
- Jazzman, Carole King. A sweetly admiring tribute to an unnamed musician.
- The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, the Walker Brothers. Need I say anything?
- The Hard Way, Mary Chapin Carpenter. The title says it all: you do what you have to do.
- Ask the Lonely, the Four Tops. Not one of their best-known songs, but a good one; you can guess the contents.
- Windy, the Association. Just a classic.
