Here we go again...

  • American Pie, Don McLean. I have to admit I've never puzzled out all of the allusions in this one, but even in incomprehension I enjoy it.

  • Love Child, the Supremes. I... admire this song.

  • Pride of Man, Gordon Lightfoot. Musically there's not much to it, but the lyrics give me the shivers every time.

  • Goodbye to You, Michelle Branch. This gets on the list via accidental associations, but I do like it.

  • At the Zoo, Simon and Garfunkel. Silly, but entertaining.

  • Jazzman, Carole King. A sweetly admiring tribute to an unnamed musician.

  • The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, the Walker Brothers. Need I say anything?

  • The Hard Way, Mary Chapin Carpenter. The title says it all: you do what you have to do.

  • Ask the Lonely, the Four Tops. Not one of their best-known songs, but a good one; you can guess the contents.

  • Windy, the Association. Just a classic.
