One of my classmates in graduate school was Tamil. I haven't heard from him in a long time, though.
Barnes (or is it just Giraut?) speaks very highly of the Cankam literature; Giraut describes it as being among the ten or twelve great literary achievements of humanity (several of which haven't been written yet). I'm not at all familiar with it; the only poetry from the subcontinent I've ever read is Tagore's Fireflies, which I love. (I have another collection of his work, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.)
