Hah! Just today, in a discussion of illegal immigration vs. outsourcing, I said:
This is less true of the service industries--you can sew the sheets abroad, but you can't change ship the bed there daily to be changed[.]
Now I'm beginning to wonder: What about hotel management can and can't be outsourced? You still couldn't change the sheets elsewhere, but the front desk could be almost anywhere you like, couldn't it?
Having been a night manager at a full-service hotel, the answer is, "It depends." Theoretically, you could issue keycards remotely. However, front desk also serves a security/guardian function. You'd have to be able to scan the ID, have scads of video feeds, etc. And the classier the hotel, the more personal the service. Anything above Motel 6/Super 8/Red Roof Inn wouldn't go for this -- and those are the hotels that *really* see the front desk as a guardian function. For one thing, who'd call the police to evict rowdy/drunk guests?
I like the red box thingie. There's nothing like knowing that you're being *watched* constantly to help you concentrate on your actual job, instead of waiting for the other red box to fall...
In the local grocery store, two automated checkout stands have been added. I never use them. Not because I dislike technology, but because I want the checkout clerks to retain their jobs.
It's not that I dislike the technology; it's that *it* dislikes *me*. I've tried them at multiple stores, & those automated things are even ornerier than I am, which takes some doing. ;)
