Actually, I remember it the other way around, being surprised when I saw his familiar face on Buffy, as the majority of other actors on the show were ( at least to me ) mostly unknowns. I think to some extent that those casting choices improved my suspension-of-disbelief for the show, as sometimes seeing people who have played other roles reminds you that "these are just actors."

I think the role I "knew him best as" was the paranoid spirit in "Ghost," who taught Patrick Swayze how to manipulate physical objects.
