Delhi

This is absolutely hideous. BBC News, Delhi, India:

'Levels of dangerous particles in the air - known as PM2.5 - are far higher than recommended and about seven times higher than in the Chinese capital Beijing.

An Indian health ministry official said the city's pollution monitors did not have enough digits to accurately record pollution levels, which he called a "disaster".'

Beijing smog is legendary. *Seven times higher*?

Hogwash

Since the problem of feral hogs seems to have come up lately, I'd like to make a brief excursion into Greek mythology.

There are numerous myths involving battles between heroes and monsters. Sometimes it's one hero versus numerous monsters, as with Hercules and the Stymphalian birds. Sometimes the fight is one-on-one, as with Theseus and the Minotaur. Sometimes two heroes will team up against a monster, e.g., Hercules and Iolaus against the Hydra.

I know of only one example where a team of heroes was enlisted against a single monster. This was in the generation before the Trojan War, so the heroes are, perhaps, less well known, but they weren't B-listers. Atalanta; Castor and Pollux; Iolaus; Jason; Laertes (Odysseus' father); Meleager; Nestor; Peleus (Achilles' father); Telamon (father of Ajax the Greater); Theseus; and a host of others. Some of them died in the fight, but they eventually killed the Calydonian Boar.

I don't care how good you are with a semi-automatic weapon, you're not going to take down a group of boars. If you actually have boars coming on to your property, call in the freaking experts!

Viva Costa Rica!

Costa Rica is a small country, but it seems that it's always been the most successful of the Central American nations. Here's more evidence of that success.

In 1940, 75% of the country was forested.
The cover diminished over the next half-century or so, as it did in many places; in 1987, only 21% was under cover.
As of 2010, the forest cover was back up to 52%.

It may be the widow's mite, but it's a damn sight better than a lot of countries are doing.

It's Not Just Here

This is horrifying: the German anti-Semitism commissioner is advising German Jews not to wear kippas - skullcaps - in public, due to the rise in anti-Semitic activities in that country.

Hero

Robert F. Smith. Remember that name: he is a hero.

A civilized nation shouldn't need such heroes; but right now, we do. Honor to him.

Slowdown!

Oh, this is neat: a town in Iceland has adapted coup d'oeil to traffic control. (They're not the first; someone there read about an experiment in New Delhi.) I wonder if it will continue to work after people get used to it, though.

Protests, and the Lack Thereof

There have been massive protests in Russia, in opposition to the Putin regime. Hundreds of people have been arrested for participating in illegal assemblies.

There appears to have been no comment from the White House on these developments. Gee, I wonder why?

"Put. The candle. Back!"

I wish it were that easy to get him back. We've lost another great, in Gene Wilder. He was suffering from Alzheimer's, so I suppose it's a mercy....

"Young Frankenstein" remains on my list of the dozen or so funniest movies I've ever seen.

Bad Week

Hard on the heels of Robin Williams' death, we've lost another one: Lauren Bacall has died.

I don't know that you'd call her a great actress, but she put in some great performances: "To Have and Have Not", "The Big Sleep", and "Key Largo" are among my not-so-guilty pleasures. I'd rate the first of them highest; she played a more, ah, active role in that story than in the other two, IMO.

Good night, Betty Joan. Say "Hi" to Bogie for us.

"Feral"

Apparently, the conservative line taken by the current government of Australia has prompted large-scale protests.

The Daily Telegraph (owned by the inimitable Murdochs) describes this with the headline "The Ferals Are Revolting".

I think it is worth pointing out that the opposite of "feral" is "domesticated".

I'd say the second Gilded Age has found its "The public be damned" Vanderbilt, if there weren't so much of this crap coming from the poor persecuted 1%ers.

Haiyan

In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan's devastation of the Philippines, reports are circulating (in, e.g., the Guardian) of rampaging mobs looting a provincial capital.

I beg you not to believe them. We often hear stories like this after natural disasters, but no one who's actually investigated gives them any credence.

On the order of 10,000 people are dead. The survivors need relief, not slander. Give what you can.
