Well, now, that was interesting.

First, some background. Since I don't drive, I rely on the city bus system to get to and from work. Unfortunately, the bus route that I use stops running at 5:45 PM, and this semester one of my classes is scheduled for 6:00-7:15 PM. Fortunately, one of the students was auditing the class, so I could, without any impropriety, ask him for a lift home after class. I have had him in a number of classes in the past; he's usually been one of the best students (frequently, the best) in the class, and he's also a really nice guy.

Anyway, tonight was the last session of that class; next week is finals week. On the drive home, he happened to mention that his second favorite subject, after mathematics, is literature. I asked appropriate leading questions, and it turned out that our tastes were remarkably consonant - different enough that we could swap recommendations, but similar enough that swapping recommendations was worthwhile. Dickinson, James, Eliot, the other Eliot, Housman...

What gripes me a little bit is that I've known this guy for about two years; we've talked quite a bit outside of class, and this semester, what with the drive home twice a week, we've talked even more; and only now, at the very end of his final semester at SIUE, do we make this particular connection.

Sometimes life's a tease, you know?

But at least you've *made* the connection! Once made, doesn't have to be lost...It's really nice to discover those kinds of bonds. :)

Said Ms. Pot to Mr. Kettle? ;)

Let's just say, hornedhopper's the expert in connections & bonds; after all, that's the original meaning of "lien." :)
