Desperation?

I just received a letter informing me that I had been nominated for membership in the American Chemical Society.

The last time I did anything having to do with chemistry, I was in ninth grade. That was almost forty years ago.

So, think they'd let you in if you applied? :) I'll nominate you, if you think a second nomination would be helpful (or amusing!). I've been an ACS member for some 25 years or so now.

I toyed with the idea briefly, but no, I'm not inclined to drop $140 on a lark. (Besides, there's no tickybox for "Mathematics" under "Professional Interests".)

Is it one of those scams to sell you a "Who's Who In.." book?

No, it's just the ordinary dues for any professional society. (It's less than I shell out every year for the Mathematics Association of America.)
