Hidey-holes

Gracie has found her safe place, for when the world gets to be too much. Whether it be importunate dogs or crabby humans, all she has to do is crawl into the little space under the bed, between the wall and the box of - whatever that is down there. (I think it's extra leaves for the dining room table, but I'm not sure.) It's directly under my pillow.

Unfortunately, she doesn't just relax in there. She barks, and growls, and makes all kinds of noise. Once or twice I've gotten down on my knees and coaxed her out, just for a little peace.

Buster is so polite; if I'm on the bed (and especially if Gracie is also on the bed), he'll sit nearby and not jump up until invited by name. If I'm not on the bed, he has no such compunctions; I've frequently found him curled up on my pillow. This morning, I found him curled up under my pillow; apparently he'd just burrowed in.

Gracie, of course, doesn't wait to be invited.

Unrelated Addendum: Singing along to "Sweet Caroline" while holding an excitable terrier in your lap is not a good idea. (Or any other song, probably. Maybe "M'na m'na"....)

Tucker has done this sort of thing. Decided that in the night he's just going to go ballistic upon invisible squirrls.

Which would be ok. Except I live in an apartment. And he sleeps with me.

Dachshunds should not wake mommy. It's a key rule of life.

Perhaps Gracie would like a crate? It sounds as though she may be used to having a place of her own. Crates are frequently posted on Freecycle sites.

That's a possibility. She's also taken to scooting under the couch, and (at night) burrowing under the sheets with me.

When I was first looking for my wheeled crate [looks like a milk-crate, only with a retractable handle & wheels], dog-crates kept coming up on the searches. If she's small enough, she might like one of those. They're only $20-25 from Staples or OfficeMax, etc. They're also foldable & made to hold up to about 75 pounds. They're super for book sales [portion control? ;)], but also might do for a dog, especially for conveying same to vets. I recommend getting one with a lid.

On office supply websites, look under "wheeled file cart" to find them.
