Magnifier
I feel rather silly.
Remember the fuss I made about Windows Magnifier? Turns out that wasn't it at all. There's a little button on the side of my mouse: tap it once, a magnifier comes on; tap it again, the magnifier goes off.
That's it. That's all it takes. The desktop shuffling and all the other unpleasant stuff was the result of my flailing around trying to fix things. Kind of an autoimmune disorder.
As my brother would say, RTFM.
