Sad News
This morning, I made a quick check on the kittens. When I peeked in, it looked as though Shadow was dead, but I didn't have time to make sure. When I returned from work just now, I made another check, this time with a flashlight, and confirmed it. Part of Shadow's hindquarters seemed to have been bitten off; I'm fairly sure that was not true this morning, but I have no explanation. Tab seems to still be okay.

In other words, it wasn't you walking in on her now and then which caused this.

It sounds like you did everything you could possibly have done. Feral cats are so unpredictable: when they don't come back for a while, *anything* could have happened. I'm glad she didn't, in the end, abandon her kittens, but life in the wild is hard. I agree with Cuz NeonNurse that there was probably something wrong with it to begin with. Good luck with the situation. Console yourself that you've provided a better safe harbor from the elements that Mama couldn't have expected to have.
P.S. Great new picture for your icon!!

Unfortunately, mother cats who do not have good mothering skills eating their dead kittens is not uncommon. Every time I encounter it, it makes me irrationally made.
