This is my first, last, and only word on today's game.

The Chargers deserved to lose.

They were scaring the hell out of me, right up through the final kick.

Teams like the byes, for rest, recovery, and home field, but I think most lose a bit of edge.

Naw, c'mon, they didn't deserve to lose. I wasn't intently watching every moment of this one, but what I did see--besides that it was only by a lousy field goal--didn't look so very terrible.

I felt kinda bad for 'em, actually. And I thought about you, with sympathies.

Kewl for New Orleans, though, huh!?

Most of the time, the Chargers were playing creditably. But there were three or four occasions when they should have put the game away, only to make incredibly stupid mistakes.

Example number 1: The Patriots have the ball, third and long in their own territory. The Chargers rush breaks in and sacks the quarterback - and then one of them delivers a celebratory headbutt to one of the opposing players. Fifteen yard penalty and automatic first down; the Patriots go on to score.

Example number 2: The Patriots have it fourth and five. The quarterback unloads a long pass. A Charger defender intercepts it, which is stupid in the first place - bat it down, and you get the ball at the line of scrimmage. Then he fumbles, and the Patriots recover and go on to score.

Oh, no. They deserved to lose.

I'd say both of those are stupid, but within the normal range. The 4th down thing happens rarely, and it was clear from the post game comments that McCree doesn't have the right mind set for it.

Which is the coach's fault, really, and two bonehead calls by Schottenheimer, if reversed, would have been more than sufficient to preserve the win.

IMHO, the Chargers deserved to win; they were let down by their coach.

And the more I hear, the more I don't like what I hear about the post FG exhibition by some of the Pats, understandable though it might be. As a Pats fan, I apologize.

"sacks the quarterback"

Is this a football term of art, or is your Civilization game currently dominating your lexicon?

[identity profile] stoutfellow.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a term of art; it means to tackle him behind the line of scrimmage, so that his team loses ground.

Aww, and here I was looking forward to all the *interesting* turns of phrase you were going to be using..."I plundered the local grocery store." "My minions did well in the exam today." (g)

Only under provocation.
