Thanksgiving Dinner

I don't think I'm going to try anything particularly ambitious for Thanksgiving this year. I think I'll try my hand at quiche Lorraine, with a Waldorf salad on the side. (Okay, I'll be a little ambitious: I'm going to make the salad dressing from scratch, using a boiled-dressing recipe from Joy of Cooking. The recipe daunted me at first, but then I remembered that I do have a double boiler, so...)

Hmmm. Dessert. Pie. Coconut cream pie? Maybe...

"Coconut cream pie?"

Mmmm. Always a great choice!

I have next to no experience making dessert pies, but I want to try my hand at this. (I do have a bag of shredded coconut sitting around, so I may as well make use of it.)

The only dessert pie I've made before was one I learned about as an undergraduate: mix 8 oz of lime yogurt with 8 oz of whipped cream, spread it into an already-baked pie crust, and stick it in the freezer until it sets. My 19-year-old self thought it was delicious, but he also liked a drink called "swampwater" - equal parts orange soda and root beer...

One of my stepbrother-in-laws makes his own pie crusts that are the best I've ever had. I have tried several times, but finally realize that I am always going to like Sara Lee's better than mine.

Swampwater?? Alec thinks this sounds very good. Yeech.

Er, nitpicky self: "stepbrothers-in-law"
