Sunday Music: Chronicle, Creedence Clearwater Revival
Album Title: Chronicle
Why I Bought It: This is a thing that's happened to me several times. I notice a song that I like, find the title and performer, buy an album, and discover a number of songs on it that I already knew and liked. In this case, it was CCR's "Lodi" that snagged me.
What I Like (Despairing): "Lodi". I've toyed with writing a filk, sung as by Captain Auson, with the chorus "Oh Lord, here comes Naismith again!"
What I Like (Creepy): "Bad Moon Rising". It's right up there with "Riders on the Storm". (Bob Seger's "In Your Time" is a distant satellite in the same system.)
What I Like (Joyful): "Down on the Corner". I love a good street performance. Honorable Mention: "Up Around the Bend".
What I Like (Mournful): "Someday Never Comes". File this one alongside the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Long Hard Road", under "rural blues".
What I Don't Like (Loud): "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight have each done this song proud; CCR's version just doesn't seem to have much heart to it, neither Gaye's despair nor Knight's fury.
Overall: I like this album, all things considered. Besides the WILs above, there's the rambunctious "Proud Mary", the loopy "Lookin' Out My Back Door", "Who'll Stop the Rain", "Long As I Can See the Light", and several more. I don't get much out of "Green River", or "Run Through the Jungle", and there are one or two more in that category, but I'd say close to 75% of this album is good stuff.
