Fetch, Boy! Fetch!

The story under the cut is, at best, mildly amusing. It is also completely pointless. The title may be the best thing about this post. You have been warned.

To take the bus to work, I wait outside the nearby Kohl's clothing store. There's a man who works there, inside and outside, with whom I often shoot the breeze while waiting. Yesterday, he came out of the store with a customer who needed some help loading her purchases; she had a smallish SUV parked right outside. As they were finishing, the wind suddenly picked up, and I heard her say, "Oops! I don't think I can catch it!" I looked up; she was gazing, with some distress, past the far side of the SUV. Now, I spent quite a few years in Scouts, and some of the ethos still sticks with me, so I trotted the length of the SUV to pursue whatever it was. As I passed the car, I glanced left to see what I was chasing.

It was one of those big plastic trash bags, a Hefty or some such, quite obviously empty. But, what the hell, I'd already committed myself... The wind picked up again; the bag was moving faster than I was, so I started to sprint after it. I cut over to intercept; one stride, two, three, and I got a foot on it, but I was moving too fast to stop. I bounced past it, spun, and dropped into a crouch to field it as it tried to blow past.

As I brought it back, the woman looked rather sheepish, saying, "Thanks! It would have been big trash..." I smiled and handed it to her, and she got in the car and drove off. The Kohl's worker looked at me appraisingly, shook his head, and said, "Man, I thought you was going after a lottery ticket!" All I could do was grin helplessly as he went back into the store.

Oh, well, at least I got some exercise out of it...

Hee hee! Good for you, though!

I always try not to litter by accident too!! :-)

(well, definitely not on purpose!!!)

Good boy! *pats head*

Just think, you may have saved a kitten or a puppy from being smothered by a big, scary piece of plastic!!

My first impression was that the small SUV was what you thought was blowing away.

Mm. Even if I caught a small SUV, I wouldn't know what to do with it. (Flashback to an old MAD cartoon about what dogs who chase cars intend...)

Now if the Scout ethic had *totally* held true, you would have grabbed the lady by the elbow and forced her to walk safely across the street after you had fielded the capricious litter. (g)

Good for you! [in more ways than one ;)]
