"Let America Be America Again"

Today is Langston Hughes' birthday. This is my favorite of his poems.

May the promise somehow, someday, be achieved.

May America be America again!

And here’s something you probably didn’t know: My paternal grandfather told me that he knew Langston Hughes in high school, back in Cleveland, Ohio.

You also have there degrees of separation from Babe Ruth, whom my father’s father met back when (around 1920 or so, when he was in pharmacy school), and from Pope John Paul II, whom my late father met; as a prominent professor of philosophy, he was invited to a conference at the Vatican, and there is a photograph of him shaking hands with the Pope.

Powerful poem, scarily relevant now; thanks for sharing it!
