Ah. Mathematical English is not quite the same language as the vernacular. The sentence "Let n = 2m be even" is a way of simultaneously declaring that n is even and giving n/2 a name. (Compare "Let ABC be a triangle" - as if something called ABC would be any other kind of polygon.) It's just convenient to name the thing and its parts at the same time.
