Back to the... Past

Wow. Just wow.

The Oxyrhynchus Papyri are finally giving up their secrets. Lost writings of Sophocles, Archilochus, Hesiod, Euripides - maybe some first-century transcriptions of the Gospels (and/or some noncanonical versions) - are coming to light, thanks to new applications of techniques originally developed for satellite imaging.

(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rfmcdpei for the tipoff.)

Something about using space technology to look at the past like that? Gives me all warm fuzzies inside.

Yeah. Take that, C. P. Snow! (I speak as one who straddles Snow's Gap...)

Wow is right! How exciting to be involved it it. I guess St. John's College's curriculum is just about to expand - a lot!

With documents of such differing ages, I wonder if it was a library that was trashed or hidden to protect it.

Were you a Johnnie, hornedhopper?

No, I stayed in-state for undergraduate and graduate degrees, but our oldest son, Kipper, is currently a sophomore at St. John's in Annapolis. He never considered the Santa Fe campus; I think the farther from home, the more intriguing (g).

How rude. I forgot to ask if you were one!

A number of my friends are Johnnies--I always thought it was a fantastic school--waltz balls & Ancient Greek! [sighs]
