EGS: Grace
Grace Sciuridae is next up.
Grace was one of the results of a joint human-uryuom breeding experiment. Now, uryuom reproduction is complex; without going into details, it allows for the birth of offspring with as many as twelve parents, some or all of whom may not be uryuom. In Grace's case, the genetic donors included a human, an uryuom, a lespuko (a non-sapient relative of the uryuoms), and, for some reason, a squirrel. She and her three "brothers" were raised in the lab; when they were in their mid-teens, the lab was raided by a villain named Damien, who killed most of the scientists and cowed the survivors into submission - all except Grace, who managed to escape.
On the run, Grace read a newspaper article recounting one of Tedd's escapades, and decided that he might be able to protect her. She could not have made a better choice; Tedd's father knew who she was, and why she was a fugitive. His resources made it possible for her to hide until the final confrontation with Damien, which ended with Damien's death and Grace's coming into her full power.
Thanks to her uryuom and lespuko parentage, Grace has considerable skill at shape-shifting, as well as telekinesis, communication with animals, and fire-resistance. In public, she presents as a teenage girl; in private, she often has a pair of what she calls antennae, but which to my eye look like prehensile pony-tails, attached to the middle of her forehead. She can take the shape and size of a squirrel; at the other end of the scale, her "omega form" is a formidable fighter, with fangs, claws, and horns. Did I mention that she can fly?
Despite her great power, Grace is fundamentally pacifistic, but when it's necessary to fight she can be utterly ruthless. Only recently has she been persuaded to be trained to use her power in non-lethal ways, for less-than-ultimate-stakes battles. She's rather ignorant of human society, due to her upbringing, but she learns very quickly and occasionally jolts her friends by understanding more than they expect. She has fallen in love with Tedd, and he with her; his, ah, eccentricities don't bother her the way they would someone of more orthodox upbringing, and her devotion has tempered some of the less pleasant aspects of his personality.
Basically, Grace's role in EGS is in the great tradition exemplified by Bull Shannon, Balki Bartokoumos, ALF, and Phoebe Buffay: the outsider, with perceptions and attitudes not quite in synch with the rest of the world. I find her amusing, but not quite as interesting as some of the other characters.
