Trains and Boats and... No, Just Trains
Slacktivist has a post up on the symbolism of trains in USAn song. Interesting thoughts; of course, they extend to literature as well. Robert Bloch and Manley Wade Wellman come to mind immediately, and I'm sure there are plenty of others.

"City of New Orleans", "500 Miles", Chuck Berry's "Downbound Train", Springsteen's completely different "Downbound Train" - there are quite a few notable songs he doesn't seem to have. (Some of them are brought up by his commenters, though.)
