Sunday Music: The Colour of My Love, Celine Dion

Album Title: The Colour of My Love

Why I Bought It: I bought Celine's first four albums, more or less as they came out.

What I Like (Thunderous): "I Remember L.A.". This is a retrospective song, in which the singer recalls a passionate and occasionally painful affair, and is seriously considering resuming it. The repeated shifts in volume (without any change in intensity), from the hammering verses of memory to the tight-throated and incomplete finish, are the main attraction of the song for me.

What I Like (Cover): "When I Fall in Love". I have at least two other covers of this song, by Dinah Washington and Nat King Cole. As you might expect, this one isn't as velvet-smooth as the other two, but it's not bad.

What I Like (Odd): "Refuse to Dance". I'm not entirely sure what this one is about, other than a once-burned-twice-shy rejection of an ambiguous offer, but it's definitely a change of pace from the ballads normally associated with Celine.

Overall: Fair to middlin', I'd say. Most of the songs on this album are fairly pleasant ("The Power of Love" and the title song); some few are (to my mind) compelling ("Only One Road", "Next Plane Out"); some are forgettable ("Lovin' Proof", "Think Twice"). I was beginning to lose interest in her by this time, and only bought one more album after this one.
