The case of the mysterious bouncing payments has been resolved. I talked to a supervisor at my bank, and she explained what had happened - a combination of an error on my part and, umm, an oversight on theirs. I've visited both online sites, made some adjustments, and paid things off (with a little help from the supervisor, in one case). It cost me about $45 in late fees and interest, but at least I know what happened, and that that particular problem won't arise again.
