Wow, that was patient of them. We decommissioned a modem bank at a university I worked at 8 years ago (faculty at the time had their ISP charges subsidised).

Of course, the modem bank concerned was 28.8k and we weren't going to pay to upgrade to 56k modems when less than a dozen people were using it and ISPs were so cheap even then.
