Dry Cherryhs

I'm currently rereading the second trilogy of Cherryh's atevi series, and enjoying the books much more than I did on first read. One thing I've noticed, which has surprised me a little, is the amount of humor in the books. Cherryh doesn't do Funny - Chanur's Legacy is a rare counterexample - and the overall plots are deadly serious, but, especially as regards Bren's interactions with Ilisidi, Banichi, and Jago, individual scenes are shot through with little bits of dry humor, the sorts of verbal play that come naturally among people who have known each other for years and are fond of each other (to the extent that that can be said of atevi).

This is definitely a good series. After I finish with the second trilogy, I'll have to try to catch up with the later books.
