I once attended a lecture - by a future Fields Medalist, no less - in which, attempting to illustrate some point or other, he spent fifteen or twenty minutes trying and failing to cut out paper dolls.

More seriously: I had constructed a two-dimensional model of something three-dimensional, and to see what it really looked like I had to cut it out and fold it up.
