Nasfic, Day Four

There wasn't a lot going on the final day of the con, but there was some fun.

I wanted to get CDs of a few of the performers, but I'd neglected to bring a bag, so I paid one last trip to the Dealers' Room and picked up some cheap used paperbacks, being sold at half cover price. This provided the bag. I wandered over to the table where Tom Smith was holding court and bought his "iTom 2.0" disc, which he autographed. Wild Mercy had been right next to him, but they weren't there; Tom told me that Sally Childs-Helton was putting on a percussion workshop at the other end of the hall. I waited about ten minutes for the workshop to end, berating myself for not having come at the beginning to take part. When it finished, I asked Sally if she had any CDs with her; she did, including the one I wanted. As I handed her the money, she told me I should have taken part in the workshop....

The next panel featured a number of top voice actors - Lani Tupu and the voices from MST3K - talking about the ins and outs of the business and demonstrating their voices. Fun, if not all that informative.

Another panel discussed the success of "Heroes" and the prospects of the several F/SF series that are debuting this fall. It was generally agreed that whichever of them was airing on Fox had no chance. (I don't remember which it was, and it doesn't matter; we're talking about Fox, here.) Other than that, the attitude was rather jaded; one or two of them might succeed, but the failure of the rest will be taken by the networks as justification for not putting on any more genre shows for another five years or so. It was also here that I learned that The Dresden Files has apparently not been renewed. Sigh. At least I've been spurred to read the books.

The closing ceremonies were kind of fun; the Childs-Heltons performed a "Day-O" pastiche in honor of the convention committee, and several of the other GoHs had interesting things to do or say.

After the con, [livejournal.com profile] mbernardi, [livejournal.com profile] filkferengi, her husband, and I went to dinner at Ponderosa again. On Monday we visited Cahokia Mounds; after touring the museum, [livejournal.com profile] filkferengi begged off from touring the Mounds themselves, but the rest of us exhausted ourselves doing so in the near-100F heat. We'd been considering the St. Louis Zoo for Tuesday, but the heat dissuaded us from that and we went to the Science Center instead. The exhibits there were fun, and not much marred by an offensively silly show at the planetarium. The three of them left for their respective homes Wednesday morning, and I'm back in the grind....
