An appeal to those more widely read in the romance genre than I, in pursuit of a fugitive memory:

Does the phrase "Emma adhered" ring a bell with anyone? (Emma, if memory serves, is a child; she "adheres", repeatedly, to the leg of a - stuffy? - gentleman who is drifting into romance with her mother.)
