Welcome to Serendip

The story begins early this year, when I decided not to ask for a summer class. That didn't mean I was completely free for summer; even if it weren't for the student projects I'm working with, I still have other duties - e.g., getting those research papers written. Nonetheless, it left my schedule much more open than usual.

A bit later, chatting with my father, I raised the possibility of coming out to San Diego to catch a Padres game. (I haven't seen one live in at least thirty years.) This would have the added benefit of letting my family see me in my summer (beardless) morph, since my only trips out in quite a few years have been for Christmas. We toyed with the idea desultorily for several weeks, and he finally ordered three tickets (him, me, and my brother) for the Padres/Dodgers game on June 15.

About a month ago, I was talking to C on the phone, and she reminded me that the clan gets together on Father's Day to celebrate my father's birthday. (It's close enough...) She ordered me to suggested that I extend my trip to include that day; being a dutiful brother and son, I did so. I'm leaving for San Diego on the 14th, and returning the following Monday.

A couple of days ago, I got an e-mail from an old high school friend; she and another friend had been reminiscing about the old crowd, and my name (among others) had come up. She had tracked me down, then, via the university web site. It's been nearly thirty years since I've heard from most of the people in my old circle, and nearly twenty-five since I've heard from any of them. Strike that: a month or so ago, yet another old classmate, independently, located me in the same fashion. He's currently living in the Boston area; these two, however, are still back in San Diego.

Several e-mails later, it appears that, in addition to the two previously-planned events, I'll also be having lunch with two of my old classmates from Crawford High on Friday. (Crawford High, by the way, no longer exists. Our old math trophies have been relocated to one of its successor schools...)
