I reviewed Earth Made of Glasshere (http://www.livejournal.com/users/stoutfellow/46826.html#cutid1). I did predict Margaret's infidelity; I also expected some sort of disaster overtaking the colonies, but didn't foresee its scope.
I found your review of The Merchants of Souls very interesting. I didn't see the question of the accomodation of cultures as being as central as you did, but I can see your interpretation. (At one point I wondered if the aliens might not be real, but merely an invention, perhaps by Shan, to encourage the reunification. I don't think that's tenable, though.)
